Freedom Writers (2007)
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Rated: PG13
Review by:: Erik Moore
This Inspiring film portrays how a novice English teacher works
hard to inspire distracted and troubled inner-city teens to not only
complete high school, but to strive to make themselves better and
the world better despite the turbulent and often violent world that
they faced every day. It shows vividly the situational problems that
can distract teens and adults from rational, compassionate, and
forward thinking as they struggle with the short-sighted values and
goals of gang life. It also shows specific methods for engaging
such students. This will be a tear-jerker for many that ends up a
feel-good movie. The Freedom Writers themselves started an
organization to help kids and teachers in similar situations and

Stand and Deliver (1988)

In this inspiring film a new math teacher takes at-risk students on
whom other teachers had given up and engages them in a
dramatic way that lets them see the value of calculus as a key first
step in building a better life for themselves and escaping cycles of
poverty and dependency. Math is often portrayed as the subject
that is most hard to teach to disinterested students, and this movie
offers some vivid portrayals of an approach that has demonstrated
success. The subject of the film, Jamie Escalante, also hosted
two film series for PBS, Futures I, and Futures II that focus on how
mathematics and learning in general is linked to attaining
dream-jobs in various career tracks.
